Welcome to Sargentology!
I do not judge, I only chronicle.
– John Singer Sargent
This website is the result of the excellent camaraderie and scholarship we experienced at the interdisciplinary conference Sargentology: New Perspectives on the Works of John Singer Sargent, held at the University of York, April 28 & 29, 2016.
In order to preserve the momentum of bringing together a network of Sargent scholars and scholarship, we look forward to using this space as a new way to foster community engagement, dialogue and feedback on new (and old) perspectives of the works of the late nineteenth-century portraitist John Singer Sargent. This will include links to information on upcoming exhibitions, blog posts on everything from exhibition reviews, specific works or study days, a page dedicated to collating archival and museum resources, and finally, uploads of recent published scholarship.
We are always looking to meet new scholars or anyone with an interest in Sargent, so please drop us a line and introduce yourself! We also welcome suggestions for blog posts, so get in touch if you'd like to write something for us.
We look forward to working with you to become a key resource for Sargent studies in contemporary art historical practice.
